Cavity.Lab's Foot is in the Door!

Cavity.Lab had it's first event, Cavity.Lab Collab March 19th 2011, just 3 weeks after the planning and organization of Cavity.Lab started. We had this event in order to raise money for track lighting in the space and to introduce our concept to the community. We hosted a potluck, sponsored by Magners with live music from Andy Thibodeau. The space it self was in horrible condition and needed funds to start construction. Over the next month, we spent every day cleaning, constructing and designing the new space with our interns. We sanded and painted pipes, painted the ceiling and walls, completely redesigned the bathroom with bright walls and new flooring, installed drywall, we created a bar and retail area, painted the floors, cleaned vigorously and hung the track lighting.

April 30th, 2011- Skerrit Bwoy from Major Lazer performed at the space while we had open call group show of Awesome art. This opportunity and event surprised us and with only a week to plan and promote- we learned a lot about the dynamic of our team and what we need to do to hold a successful event. We were honored to have Skerrit perform as well as our friends from Steady Knock and Krallspace. We took advantage of the opportunity for some more exposure.

On May 7th 2011, the opening of our first major exhibition, Concealed Identities took place. The exhibition was our way of introducing ourselves into the art community as an "alternative" art space by exhibiting the art created by local graffiti artists. This controversial theme helped us make a bold statement as we entered the Boston art scene and represented our desire to stand out from other galleries. We got a write up in the WeeklyDig , http://digboston.com/experience/2011/05/concealed-identities/ , which was huge for us! We were ecstatic to know that people were interested and excited for what we were doing. PBR sponsored the event and the turn out was better then expected. The art was amazing and diverse and so were the stories of the Artist's. We created a retail space where we sold items made by artists- such as jewelry, clothing, hula hoops, bags and leather goods. Exin and Evolve graced us with their live music and created the perfect atmosphere. The event was a huge success!  And here we are now...
